La Sabana Park, Costa Rica

Both private and public sectors are coming together to help give La Sabana Park a makeover with a long term plan in place that would mainly see non-native plants and trees replaced with more Costa Rican flora and fauna. Currently 70% of the park is made up of non-native trees and plants, and bringing more native plants to the park will hopefully attract more wildlife.

The sports facilities around La Sabana will also get a facelift which are used regularly on the weekends by local sports teams, as well as the foot paths that run through and around the park which are used regularly throughout the day by commuters, park goers and joggers.

The main selling attraction for the buildings that are going up is the park, so the construction and management teams are keen for the project to go ahead and willing to invest some of their own money. So to is Scotiabank. Located on the northwest corner of the park, the Canadian bank who recently took over Banex are also keen on the rejuvenation wanting La Sabana to become a “natural refuge”.

The San Jose Mayor is also behind the project and willing to help donate and raise funds for the project.

The project will be in the hands of the non-profit, non-government organization, the National Biodiversity Institute, but officials have announced that it could easily 5 – 10 years before any noticeable changes are made.
