Costa Rica’s Exports Up
By Paul Smith (Costa Rica News) The final figures are in for Costa Rica’s 2007 exports after officials spent the most of this month tallying up the totals for the final month of December to find that the amount of exports had increased by 14%.
In 2006 exports were totaled in at $8.2 billion whilst this year’s figures came in at a healthy $9.3 billion. Export levels have been slowly rising in Costa Rica over the past 5 years when last year’s exports were up by a peak 17% on the year before.
The amount exported to the United States, Costa Rica’s biggest trade partner, amassed 38% of the $9.3 billion, down by 50% in comparison to recordings from 2002. The decline in percentage is also set to carry with the looming recession that hangs over the head of the United States.
However, the decreasing percentage in exporting goods to the United States may prove to be a good thing. With a variety of different exporters including that of new Europe connections and of course new trade links to China, means that the Costa Rica export industry no longer needs to totally rely on the income from the United States as it heads for a recession.
