Cell Phones in Costa Rica to Die

(Costa Rica News) From the start of this coming Sunday starting at 12.01am mobile phones in Costa Rica will be cut off from their service.

But don’t worry, this isn’t a permanent cut-off as network connections will resume later on at around 6am.

The total shut down for the network is being done by the state run monopoly for telecommunications, ICE (Costa Rican Electricity Institute), who will be running tests across their systems in preparation for the introduction of an extra digit in the Costa Rican telephone numbers.

Costa Rican phone numbers are set to increase from 7 digits to 8 digits just prior to Semana Santa, March 20th, to help increase the amount of landline and mobile phone lines in line with ever increasing demand for them. Existing landlines will have an extra ‘2’ placed at the beginning of their number whilst mobile phones will acquire an 8 at the beginning.

It has been rumoured that some companies have had to change many phone numbers manually to keep their records up to date for when the change comes, whilst others have developed quick and easy methods to make the changes possible.
